Description

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare two 9-inch round cake pans by greasing and flouring them.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Combine the wet ingredients: In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract.
  4. Blend the mixtures: Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture, stirring gently until just combined.
  5. Incorporate the boiling water into the batter until smooth.
  6. Bake: Divide the batter between the prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes.
  7. Cool: Remove from the oven and let cool in the pans for 20-25 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
  8. Make the frosting: Beat the softened butter until creamy, then gradually add powdered sugar and heavy cream until smooth and fluffy. Stir in orange zest, vanilla extract, and salt.
  9. Assemble the cake: Once cooled, frost between the layers and on the top and sides of the cake.
  10. Garnish: Finish with a sprinkle of orange zest and chocolate shavings before serving.

Notes

You can bake the cake layers a day ahead and frost just before serving. Avoid overmixing to prevent a dense cake.
