Description

A delightful babka filled with rich chocolate and zesty orange, offering a warm, comforting experience with every slice.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 3/4 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and instant yeast. Whisk them together to distribute the yeast evenly.
  2. Combine wet ingredients: In another bowl, mix the warm milk, melted butter, and egg until fully combined.
  3. Create the dough: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until they come together. Knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes, until it feels smooth and elastic. Place in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  4. Roll out the dough: Once risen, punch the dough down gently. Roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle, about 14 x 18 inches. Spread cocoa powder, orange zest, brown sugar, and cinnamon over the surface.
  5. Form the log: Starting from the long edge, roll the dough tightly into a log and pinch the seams to seal.
  6. Twist and place: Cut the log in half lengthwise, revealing the layers. Twist the two halves together and carefully place them in a greased loaf pan.
  7. Final rise: Cover the loaf pan and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
  8. Bake to perfection: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown.
  9. Cool and slice: Allow the babka to cool for about 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Notes

Consider using almond milk for a dairy-free option or refrigerating the dough overnight for convenience. Experiment with nuts for added crunch.
