Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 3 large eggs
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
Instructions
- In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt.
- Add the yeast mixture, vegetable oil, and 3 eggs to the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into three equal parts. Roll each part into a long rope and braid them together.
- Place the braided dough on a greased baking sheet and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Brush the dough with the beaten egg for a shiny finish.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
- Let it cool before slicing and serving.
Notes
- For a sweeter bread, you can add more sugar to the dough.
- Challah can be frozen for later use; just wrap it tightly in plastic wrap.
- Experiment with different toppings like sesame or poppy seeds.
