Description
Greek Easter Bread, also known as Tsoureki, is a traditional sweet bread that is often enjoyed during the Easter celebrations in Greece. It is known for its rich flavor and beautiful braided shape.

- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup milk
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 3 large eggs
- 1 packet active dry yeast
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground mahleb (optional)
- 1 teaspoon ground mastic (optional)
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
Instructions
- In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk and let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, and optional spices (mahleb and mastic).
- In another bowl, whisk together the eggs and melted butter.
- Add the yeast mixture and egg mixture to the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours or until doubled in size.
- Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into three equal parts.
- Roll each part into a long rope and braid them together.
- Place the braided dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Cover and let it rise again for about 30-45 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Brush the dough with beaten egg for a shiny finish.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.
- Let it cool before serving.
Notes
- For a more traditional flavor, consider adding orange zest to the dough.
- Tsoureki can be stored in an airtight container for several days.
- It is often enjoyed with a cup of coffee or tea.
