Description

Greek Easter Bread, also known as Tsoureki, is a traditional sweet bread that is often enjoyed during the Easter celebrations in Greece. It is known for its rich flavor and beautiful braided shape.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground mahleb (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon ground mastic (optional)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk and let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, and optional spices (mahleb and mastic).
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the eggs and melted butter.
  4. Add the yeast mixture and egg mixture to the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
  5. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  6. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours or until doubled in size.
  7. Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into three equal parts.
  8. Roll each part into a long rope and braid them together.
  9. Place the braided dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  10. Cover and let it rise again for about 30-45 minutes.
  11. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  12. Brush the dough with beaten egg for a shiny finish.
  13. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.
  14. Let it cool before serving.

Notes

  • For a more traditional flavor, consider adding orange zest to the dough.
  • Tsoureki can be stored in an airtight container for several days.
  • It is often enjoyed with a cup of coffee or tea.
